The History of Community Christian Counseling
In 2002, Dr. Gary Greven, a long-time Counseling Psychologist, and Clergy shared with Jim Evans his vision of a free-standing Biblically-based counseling center in our community. An organizing committee was formed from area church and business leaders, and many area pastors were
interviewed as to their need for counseling assistance for their fellowships. All agreed it would be of benefit to the local church community. The key points of agreement were that the new center should be:
1. Faithful to biblical principals
2. Staffed by counselors well trained in using Scripture as the foundation for their work
3. Operated with the highest financial integrity
At the same time, Dr. Henry Edwards was ending his 35-year medical practice at 518 South 7 the Street in Terre Haute. Local business owners Frank & Janet Volkers learned of the project and through their foundation, Wabash Valley Urban Connection, Inc., funding was made possible to purchase the building and property from Dr. and Mrs. Edwards in December 2002. In January 2003 remodeling of the building began, and program development was initiated. An Indiana not-for-profit corporation was created and registered with the Indiana Secretary of State, and the volunteer Board of Directors were recruited. The first clients were welcomed in November 2003.
